What's the big deal about Bisphenol A and Phthalates?
SafeMama.com is a great site where parents can go and get informed on the latest product recalls, health concerns and learn on how to keep your child safe ! Visit their site and read their (Jan 24th) article on BPA-free baby products. Our store has been very careful in choosing ONLY baby bottles and toys that do not contain BPA (Bisphenol A) or Phthalates. These are toxic chemicals found in many plastic baby bottles and plastic toys...which may be dangerous to your baby. Take the time to read a bit about these chemicals, and why you should buy products that do not contain them !
A recent article by Parenting Magazine (Sept. 2007) says:
"Early this year, a report by a California environmental group brought attention
to toxic chemicals in plastic baby bottles, causing a run on glass
versions....The concern: A chemical in some plastics called bisphenol A (BPA)
[which has been linked with cancer, impaired immune function, hyperactivity, and
other problems] can leach into a bottle's contents. "There's no need to be
frightened, but you should try to reduce your baby's exposure to this chemical,"
says pediatrician Harvey Karp, M.D., a board member of Healthy Child Healthy
World, a non-profit group that raises awareness about environmental toxins..."
Then CBS News reported (Oct. 2007) that:
"California has banned toys and baby products containing more than a trace
amount of a chemical used to soften plastics that scientists have linked to
health problems. The ban on phthalate makes California the first U.S. state to
impose severe limits on a chemical that is widely used in baby bottles, soft
baby books, teething rings, plastic bath ducks and other toys....Beginning in
2009, any product made for young children that contains more than one tenth of
one percent of phthalates cannot be made, sold or distributed in California...."
