Food: When to Choose ORGANIC ?

Talks about "going green" and "eating organic" have been around for a while...but in the last 2 years this topic has exploded and seeped into all industries and markets. Personally, I was one to not really pay attention to all the alerts, case studies, and statistics that were thrown around, but the minute I got pregnant with my first child (everything changed!). The thought of bringing my child into an unsafe and polluted planet...and feeding or dressing her in potentially harmful chemical/toxic materials - now meant a lot. So much, in fact, that NewBornMom was the direct result of two friends' (me and my biz partner) quest for safer product alternatives. After many months of intense research, we managed to become quite savvy on all things "green" when it came to our babies.

However, when it comes to my and my husband's diet - we haven't quite caught the "organic fever" yet. I guess in a way we feel like it's more important that our kids get the healthy stuff....while it's ok for us to eat whatever. Besides we're never really sure which products to look-out for and choose the organic version. Some studies say organic is really only necessary for certain foods (as the conventional versions pose a higher risk of health issues).... some say organic is only really necessary for children (during their important development years)....and some say that 100% organic is the way to go. It's no wonder that many people are as confused as my husband and I.

So after much reading, compiling of information, and in efforts to join our kids in eating as healthy as posible - we've decided to go "organic" with certain food groups. These foods, are the ones many experts have agreed their "non-organic" versions contain the most harmful chemical junk. I gladly share this list with all of you as mere information (please don't write me asking for any nutritional/medical advise as I clearly have none !!)

Milk, Coffee, Peaches, Apples, Strawberries, Grapes,

Celery, Lettuce, Sweet Bell Peppers, Potatoes & Tomatoes.

Cool Green Finds...

This is one of the unique eco-friendly products which have hit the market lately. The Brelli, is a one-of-a-kind umbrella with a minimalist design and sustainably made from bamboo, cotton string & clear canopy (all 100% biodegradable materials). This product not only looks cool, but unlike conventional umbrellas it can withstand strong downpours, harsh winds, and biodegrades in less than 5 years.

These chic, delicious-smelling candles are made of organically grown American soybeans, recycled glass & paper, and natural oils. There are never tested on animals, soot-less, and totally biodegradable. They've also been spotted in the hands of some celebrities as they were part of the Oscar's gift bag, and TV Guide's Emmy aterparty. Check them out at: Dirt Candles.

So it seems Toys 'R' Us has decided to get on the "green" bus. They are launching their own new line of enviromentally-friendly dolls, wooden & plush toys which will be available nationwide at all retail stores, and online by Earth Day (April 22). All their wooden products are made with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified wood, their plush toys with certified organic cotton and colored using natural or water-based dyes, and their packaging using at least 70% recycled materials.
