October is all about PINK !

At NewBornMom we're always about the "green" , but this month we're all about the "pink". For those of you who don't know....October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year is the 25th anniversary of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure (the largest series of 5k runs in the world with over 1 million participants), an event that raises funds and awareness for the battle against breast cancer. These races bring people from all walks of life together (cancer does not discriminate) to celebrate survivorship, and remember those who lost their lives to this disease.

In honor of this cause, we are running a store-wide "pink" promotion.
Every pink-colored item has 15% off until the end of the month!

pssst! and don't forget to keep checking your boobies periodically.

4U 2ReUSE

Many of the most ingenious & creative ideas have come from a mom or team of moms (that of course is my totally unbias opinion ;o) The latest groovy "eco" idea comes thanks to Bibi Rogers (not to be confused with Mimi Rogers - Tom Cruise's 1st wife), in the form of 4U 2ReUSE bag carriers.

These eco-friendly, hand-made, colorful carriers are meant for you to store your plastic bags in....and use them when out walking your pooch, taking lil' Billy out for a stroll, keep them in your car for long trips, take them on your picnic, etc... It's just a clever way to encourage people to reuse the plethora of plastic bags one gets everywhere (no matter how hard you try to stay away). Yes, ideally we would all use re-usable totes.....and plastic bags would be abolished once & for all.....but lets face it....we're still far from that day. In the meantime, what does one do with all these bags? ReUSE, says Rogers.

Check out some of their cool designs:

What are VOCs ?

We pride ourselves in carrying products that all contain low or zero VOCs.....and although most of you have seen or heard this acronym before, not many know what it stands for.....or why it's such a big deal. So in response to all the phone calls & e-mails we get on this subject -- we've decided to offer you a crash course:

What does VOC stand for? Volatile Organic Compound. This is a general term used for chemicals that emit harmful gases into the air we all breathe. These gases have been carefully studied and found to be a leading contributor to many diseases (not only respiratory) in adults and children alike.

What sort of things emit VOCs? We hate to say it, but unfortunately many of the stuff around our homes emit high levels of toxic gases. Mostly anything that contains Formaldehyde (commonly found in wood glues, stains, paints & plastics) or Polyurethane (commonly found in topcaots, paints, and used as base material in foam).

Wanna know the worst part? the majority of conventional children furniture use these toxic chemicals in their manufacturing process, leaving the consumer with a less-than-safe product to take home. Yuup....your precious bundle of joy which you just spent 9 months staying away from sushi for, avoiding that cocktail for, ingesting a daily pre-natal vitaman for....now probably sleeps in a room full of VOC-emitting furniture & décor!

Who is affected by VOCs? Any living organism that breathes in air is exposed to these nasty fumes. This is especially true in children due to their still inmature & delicate organs. Plus, relative to body weight and lung surface....they breathe more air per pound than adults. It has also been found that children are exposed to more toxic gases than adults due to their short statures....making them closer to the ground where higher concentrations of chemicals can be found.

What can you do to avoid VOCs in your home? Two words: GO GREEN! As cliché as this may sound, reducing the amount of chemicals in the products you use is the only way for you and your kids to live a healthier life. When it comes time to buying furniture or painting your walls -- buy only low or no VOC products. They might be a bit pricier, but hey -- it's your health we're talking about.
